Mumbai BEST Restarts Bus Services From CSMT After Four-Day Maratha Quota Protest

Mumbai witnessed a cautious return to normalcy on Tuesday as the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) Undertaking resumed bus operations from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) following a four-day suspension caused by the ongoing Maratha quota agitation. The restoration of services brought immediate relief to commuters navigating South Mumbai’s commercial hubs, which had been severely impacted by protest-related blockades.

The disruption, which began earlier in the week, paralysed crucial arteries in areas such as Nariman Point, Backbay, and Colaba, forcing office-goers and residents to seek alternative modes of travel, including long walks and shared transport. Officials highlighted that the agitation, led by activist groups advocating for the Maratha community, mobilised thousands of protesters to key city junctions, particularly around CSMT, prompting the temporary suspension of several BEST routes. “BEST has resumed operations from the Bhatia Baug area outside CSMT. Routes 138 and 115 are now operational, although full normalcy has not yet been restored,” an official confirmed, adding that adjustments in service schedules remain necessary due to partial disruptions.

Traffic authorities have implemented a series of diversions to manage movement across South Mumbai. Key roads such as DN Road, Mahapalika Marg, and Hazarimal Somani Marg continue to be closed, with buses rerouted via Mahatma Phule Market, LT Marg, and Metro Junction towards Hutatma Chowk. Several other routes remain suspended or curtailed, particularly in proximity to Azad Maidan, reflecting ongoing protest activity in the city’s central precincts. Despite these challenges, officials report incremental improvements in traffic flow. Traffic police have reopened both lanes of DN Road between JJ Flyover and Hutatma Chowk, though the square immediately outside CSMT remains partially obstructed by vehicles and protestors’ installations. Experts note that timely resumption of public transport is critical for reducing carbon emissions by curbing reliance on private vehicles, aligning with the city’s sustainable transport objectives.

Urban planners and transport analysts emphasise the need for long-term strategies to safeguard essential commuter services during civic protests, advocating for coordinated traffic management and resilient public transport frameworks. The recent episode underscores the importance of balancing civic rights to protest with the functional needs of a megacity, ensuring equitable access to transport and minimal disruption to economic activity. As Mumbai gradually returns to routine operations, the focus remains on monitoring ongoing demonstrations and maintaining adaptive measures to prevent future interruptions, reinforcing the city’s commitment to sustainable, inclusive, and efficient urban mobility.
