Mumbai Begins Coastal Road Phase 2 Work On Goregaon Stretch Targets Northern Connectivity

Mumbai’s ambitious Coastal Road Project has officially commenced work on a segment of its second phase, focusing on a 1.2-kilometre stretch in Goregaon. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated foundation work in this area, which lies outside the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) boundary, marking a significant step forward for this major infrastructure development. A senior civic official recently conducted a site inspection to review progress and ensure adherence to project guidelines, emphasizing careful execution, especially concerning environmentally sensitive zones.

This northern phase of the Coastal Road is envisioned to connect Versova in the western suburbs all the way to Bhayandar, incorporating a complex design that includes inter-tidal structures, elevated roads, and twin tunnels. While the initial Goregaon stretch is proceeding, much of the larger project area traverses critical land and creeks falling under the CRZ. Earlier this month, the BMC secured initial (Stage I) approvals for mangrove forest diversion from the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The civic body will now approach the High Court for final working permissions, with Stage II (final) approvals from the Ministry to follow.

The overall second phase, estimated to cost approximately ₹20,000 crore, spans nearly 25 kilometres and is projected for completion by 2028-2029. It will significantly improve north-south connectivity and alleviate traffic congestion across the city. This particular Goregaon segment is part of Package B, covering a broader 1.66-kilometre area. Comprehensive oversight during the project’s execution aims to minimize environmental impact and integrate sustainable urban planning principles.

This crucial infrastructure development underscores Mumbai’s commitment to enhancing urban mobility and fostering sustainable growth. By improving connectivity and reducing commute times, the project aims to bolster economic activity and enhance the quality of life for residents. Balancing development with environmental preservation remains a key focus for this transformative initiative.
