Mumbai’s airspace is experiencing an unprecedented surge in traffic, with a 60% increase in overflights, as escalating tensions between India and Pakistan prompt widespread flight rerouting.
The closure of 24 airports across northern India has redirected a significant volume of air traffic through Mumbai’s Flight Information Region (FIR), which now manages approximately 1,200 international overflights daily, up from the usual 750. The heightened activity follows India’s military operations targeting sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, leading to reciprocal actions and the closure of key airspaces. Airlines have been compelled to cancel or reroute over 250 flights, with major carriers like IndiGo and Air India significantly affected. Mumbai’s air traffic controllers are operating under increased pressure, managing the surge with heightened vigilance. The L301 corridor over the Arabian Sea has become a critical route, now bearing the brunt of the diverted traffic. Efforts are underway to manage the congestion, including staffing adjustments and coordination with international aviation authorities.
The rerouting has led to extended journey times for international flights, with some routes requiring additional fuel stops. Air India, for instance, has designated Vienna and Copenhagen as primary refuelling points for its transatlantic services. The current situation underscores the interconnectedness of global aviation and the ripple effects of geopolitical tensions.
