Mumbai Aludecor Pushes Fire Safety In Building Materials

Growing concerns about façade fire safety in modern buildings are pushing India’s construction materials industry to re-examine how building products are tested and certified before reaching project sites. Against this backdrop, façade materials manufacturer Aludecor has launched a new public communication initiative highlighting the importance of fire-safety verification in aluminium composite panels used widely across urban buildings.

The campaign centres on a short film aimed at construction stakeholders—architects, contractors and façade consultants—who increasingly rely on aluminium composite panels (ACP) for exterior cladding, signage systems and interior architectural finishes. These panels are widely used because they combine lightweight construction with aesthetic flexibility. However, experts say the fire performance of façade materials has become a critical safety concern as cities adopt more high-rise and mixed-use building designs.Industry specialists note that ACP panels can behave differently under fire conditions depending on their core composition and manufacturing standards. When panels do not meet appropriate fire-retardant specifications, they may contribute to the spread of flames along building façades, increasing risks during emergencies. The issue has gained attention globally as several urban fire incidents have highlighted vulnerabilities in façade materials.

Through its new initiative, Aludecor is emphasising the importance of independently verifying product claims before installation. The communication focuses on a central principle: building materials that claim fire-resistant properties should be validated through scientific testing before being trusted in real-world construction environments. To strengthen credibility around testing, the company has collaborated with academic research institutions including IIT Delhi and IIT Roorkee, enabling third-party evaluation of ACP samples in specialised laboratories. The initiative allows architects, builders and fabricators to submit samples from any manufacturer for fire-performance testing. 

The testing framework focuses on parameters such as reaction to fire, weathering durability, adhesion strength and long-term environmental resistance. According to industry data referenced by the company, façade panels can undergo more than 200 separate performance and durability assessments before being approved for use in buildings. Another key feature of the testing initiative is its anonymised evaluation process. Samples are assessed without revealing brand identity or project information, a method intended to ensure that results reflect only the material’s actual performance characteristics. 

Urban planners say the campaign reflects a wider shift within India’s construction ecosystem toward stricter material accountability. As cities densify and vertical construction becomes more common, façade materials play a larger role in determining overall building safety.The issue is particularly relevant for rapidly growing urban centres where façade cladding has become a defining element of contemporary architecture. Industry observers believe that stronger testing frameworks and transparent certification systems could help reduce safety risks while encouraging responsible innovation in building materials.

As India’s built environment expands, the conversation around façade materials is gradually moving beyond aesthetics and cost toward long-term safety and performance. For architects and developers, ensuring that façade systems meet verified fire-safety standards is likely to become an increasingly central requirement in the design of resilient urban buildings.
