Mumbai Alert: Behrampada Chawl In Bandra East Collapses, 10 Feared Trapped Inside

In the early hours of Friday, a three-storey residential chawl collapsed in Mumbai’s Bandra East, trapping at least 10 individuals beneath the rubble and sparking a multi-agency rescue mission. The incident, reported around 5:56 am from Bharat Nagar near Namaj Committee Masjid, has intensified concerns over the safety of Mumbai’s ageing buildings amid ongoing monsoon pressures.

The building, a ground-plus-three-storey chawl structure identified as Chawl No. 37, came crashing down with residents still inside. Officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed that seven people have been rescued so far and are currently undergoing treatment at Bhabha Hospital in Bandra. Their conditions remain under observation. The rescue operation has drawn swift responses from several agencies including the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), Mumbai Police, BMC disaster response units, Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), and the Public Works Department (PWD). Additionally, teams from private emergency services and local staff have joined forces on the ground to intensify search efforts.

A senior official from the MFB reported that the operation is being carried out with extreme caution to avoid triggering further structural instability. “Our teams are manually clearing debris in critical zones while keeping all necessary medical support on standby,” the official noted. Heavy machinery and sniffer dogs have also been deployed to expedite the search for survivors. The cause of the structural collapse is still under investigation. However, experts suggest that monsoon stress combined with long-term neglect of structural maintenance could have contributed significantly. Officials from the housing authority emphasised that repeated notices had been issued regarding unsafe buildings in the area.

With similar incidents recurring each monsoon season, questions over the state of Mumbai’s urban housing infrastructure have grown more urgent. Experts argue for the urgent need for citywide building audits, particularly for older chawls and unregulated structures that house thousands. This tragedy also underscores the mounting pressure on the city’s emergency services during weather-related disasters. As rescue teams continue their work, the civic administration is expected to face increased scrutiny over its enforcement of safety standards in residential structures.

While the final toll and the exact cause remain unclear at this hour, the incident has reignited the debate over urban planning, building safety regulations, and the need for sustainable housing solutions in Mumbai’s high-density zones. Authorities have assured that updates will be shared as the operation continues and investigations proceed.
