Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai recently conducted a full-scale emergency exercise to assess its preparedness for large-scale incidents, highlighting the airport’s commitment to passenger safety and operational resilience. The drill simulated an aircraft overshooting the runway and catching fire, prompting coordinated responses from aviation, security, medical, and disaster-management teams.
Full-scale exercises of this nature are held biennially at CSMIA, with previous drills conducted in 2023 and 2021. Officials stated that such simulations are designed to test the effectiveness of crisis protocols under realistic conditions while ensuring regular airport operations remain uninterrupted. “Emergency drills are critical to identify gaps, enhance inter-agency communication, and ensure all stakeholders are well-prepared for real-life situations,” a senior airport official explained.The exercise involved multiple agencies, including Air Traffic Control, the Indian Air Force, Mumbai Police, Traffic Police, the Mumbai Fire Brigade, Civil Defence, CISF, Customs, Immigration, the Airport Health Organisation, and ground-handling operators. Additional participants included hospitals, ambulance services, and nearby hotels, reflecting the broader ecosystem required to manage mass-casualty scenarios effectively.Teams were evaluated on response speed, firefighting efficiency, passenger triage, medical evacuation, and communication coordination between frontline units and command centres. Observers from various agencies monitored performance, identifying areas for improvement to strengthen operational protocols.
“Simulated incidents allow us to refine procedures and ensure rapid, efficient responses during real emergencies,” noted an emergency management expert.
