The Sabarmati Multimodal Hub, a key node in the Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor, has been awarded the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) Gold Rating, marking a first for any facility linked to India’s inaugural bullet train project. This recognition underlines efforts to embed sustainable design into one of the country’s most ambitious transport initiatives.
Situated in Gujarat, the Sabarmati hub has been designed to integrate multiple transport modes, connecting the conventional Sabarmati railway station, the metro network, the upcoming bullet train station, and the Bus Rapid Transit System. Industry experts note that this approach supports seamless, transit-oriented mobility while reducing reliance on private vehicles, a key step toward climate-resilient urban planning. The hub’s exterior features a stainless steel mural depicting the historic Dandi March, merging cultural heritage with modern infrastructure. Sustainable features were central to the hub’s design. Solar panels on terraces, energy-efficient lighting, certified green building materials, and water-saving plumbing fixtures form part of a comprehensive environmental strategy. Natural lighting, optimized ventilation, and effective waste segregation enhance operational efficiency while reducing ecological footprint. Urban planners highlight that such integrated green measures are essential for large-scale public infrastructure in high-density corridors.
The Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train project itself has seen notable progress. Out of the 508 km corridor, more than 332 km of viaduct and 415 km of pier work have been completed. Across the route, 17 river bridges, five prestressed concrete bridges, and 12 steel bridges have been finalised. Track laying on reinforced concrete beds covers approximately 146 km of route, while over 4.8 lakh noise barriers have been installed along 245 km to mitigate environmental impacts. Tunnel works are advancing in Maharashtra, with the first breakthrough achieved in the seven mountain tunnels of Palghar district. Excavation is ongoing for the remaining tunnels, alongside progress on the 21 km NATM tunnel between BKC and Shilphata. Rolling stock depots at Surat and Ahmedabad are under construction, and station superstructures in Gujarat are at advanced stages. In Maharashtra, elevated stations and base slab casting at Mumbai underground stations have commenced.
Transport officials indicate that the IGBC Gold certification for Sabarmati reinforces the broader commitment to sustainable infrastructure across India’s high-speed rail network. By integrating green architecture, energy efficiency, and multimodal connectivity, the project aims to reduce operational carbon intensity while providing commuters with a modern, accessible travel experience. As construction advances across both Gujarat and Maharashtra, the Sabarmati hub sets a benchmark for environmentally responsible station design, reflecting an emerging paradigm where infrastructure growth is closely aligned with climate resilience, urban mobility planning, and people-first transport solutions.
