The Central Railway is set to enhance suburban rail connectivity on the Belapur–Uran corridor from December 15, introducing five new pairs of trains. The expansion coincides with the opening of two new stations, Targhar and Gavan, aimed at improving commuter convenience and easing peak-hour congestion in Navi Mumbai’s rapidly developing Uran belt.
According to a CR spokesperson, the additional services will raise the total daily trains on the Uran line from 40 to 50. The first local train from Uran will depart at 5.35 am, with the last service at 10.05 pm. Services from Belapur will operate between 5.45 am and 10.15 pm, while Nerul trains will run from 6.05 am to 9.30 pm. Targhar station, strategically located near the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, is expected to relieve pressure on existing commuter traffic, providing better last-mile connectivity for residents and airport-bound passengers. Gavan station will strengthen access to the industrial and residential zones of Uran, supporting the region’s urban growth and inclusive development objectives.
“Improving peak-hour frequency and extending operating hours ensures smoother and more reliable travel,” said a senior railway official. “The new stations also align with broader transport integration plans, making rail travel a viable and sustainable alternative to road commuting in this high-density corridor.” Urban planning experts note that expanding suburban rail services is critical for the city’s sustainability goals. With Navi Mumbai experiencing rapid urbanisation, increased rail connectivity can reduce reliance on private vehicles, lower emissions, and improve the overall quality of urban mobility.
