Mumbai AC Metro Like Coaches Soon For Local Trains No Fare Hike

Mumbai’s bustling local train network is set for a significant upgrade, with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announcing the imminent introduction of air-conditioned, metro-like coaches featuring automatic doors. Speaking in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, the Chief Minister assured commuters there would be no increase in ticket prices, aiming to enhance safety and comfort for millions of daily travelers. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw is expected to visit Mumbai shortly to make a formal announcement regarding this transformative development for the city’s lifeline.

Mumbai’s Chief Minister Fadnavis highlighted that the initiative directly addresses critical safety concerns associated with overcrowding and open-door coaches, referencing the tragic Mumbra accident on June 9, which claimed five lives. He drew a clear comparison to metro trains, where closed-door coaches ensure a safer and smoother journey. Fadnavis affirmed that new, purpose-built AC coaches with automatic doors will be introduced, rather than retrofitting existing ones, following a request made by the state to the Centre for these modern coaches without any fare hike. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who recently visited Mumbai, responded positively to the proposal and is expected to make an official announcement soon, confirming the approval for this significant upgrade.

Mumbai’s broader infrastructure development also received updates from Chief Minister Fadnavis. The underground Metro Line 3 corridor, which connects Colaba, Bandra Kurla Complex, and Aarey, is anticipated to become fully operational by October. Furthermore, the Navi Mumbai International Airport is projected to be completed by the end of September, with commercial operations expected to begin within two weeks of its inauguration around that date. Work on the Vadhavan Port project is also progressing rapidly, with the Chief Minister stating its potential to become one of the top ten ports globally, significantly enhancing Maharashtra’s maritime capabilities and economic prospects.

Mumbai’s commitment to enhancing its urban infrastructure is evident in these ambitious projects. The introduction of AC local trains, coupled with advancements in metro and airport connectivity, signals a concerted effort to improve residents’ quality of life and boost economic growth. These initiatives collectively aim to redefine Mumbai’s future as a world-class metropolitan hub.
