Mullaperiyar Dam Water Release Enhances Theni Irrigation

The Tamil Nadu government has initiated the release of water from the Mullaperiyar Dam to support irrigation and meet the drinking water requirements of the region.

This move aims to bolster agricultural activities and ensure a steady water supply for residents during the ongoing southwest monsoon season. The Public Works Department (PWD) has commenced the release of 300 cusecs of water daily from the Mullaperiyar Dam. Of this, 200 cusecs are allocated for irrigation purposes, benefiting approximately 14,707 acres of farmland in the Cumbum Valley, encompassing Uthamapalayam, Theni, and Bodi taluks. The remaining 100 cusecs are designated for meeting the drinking water needs of the district’s residents. This water release is scheduled to continue for 120 days, contingent upon the dam’s storage levels and prevailing weather conditions.

The timely release of water is expected to facilitate the cultivation of the first crop in the double-crop region of Cumbum Valley. Farmers are encouraged to adopt short-duration crop varieties and employ efficient water management practices to maximize yields. The availability of irrigation water is anticipated to enhance productivity and support the livelihoods of local farmers. In addition to agricultural benefits, the water release addresses the drinking water needs of Theni district’s residents. Ensuring a reliable water supply is crucial for maintaining public health and supporting the daily needs of the population. The allocation of 100 cusecs for this purpose underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding the well-being of its citizens. The release of water from the Mullaperiyar Dam is conducted with careful consideration of environmental factors. Officials monitor the dam’s water levels and weather forecasts to ensure that the release does not lead to adverse downstream effects.

This approach aligns with sustainable water management practices aimed at balancing agricultural needs with environmental preservation. The strategic release of water from the Mullaperiyar Dam represents a proactive step by the Tamil Nadu government to support agriculture and meet the drinking water needs of Theni district. By implementing this measure, the authorities aim to foster agricultural growth, ensure public health, and promote sustainable water management practices. Continued monitoring and adaptive management will be essential to address the evolving challenges posed by the monsoon season and to achieve long-term water security for the region.
