MSRTC’s 2,500 New Diesel Buses to Boost Transport Network

Mumbai: The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is poised to enhance its fleet with the arrival of the first batch of 2,500 diesel buses from Ashok Leyland, with deliveries set to commence in October 2024. This significant addition follows MSRTC’s previous order, and the production of the prototype buses has been completed. MSRTC currently operates around 14,000 buses daily, catering to approximately 5.5 million passengers.

Currently, the prototype is undergoing final testing and is anticipated to receive certification shortly. On September 10, a final inspection of the prototype took place at Ashok Leyland’s factory in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. According to officials, deliveries are scheduled to start next month with the initial batch of 50 to 100 buses, referred to as “Lalpari,” joining the MSRTC fleet. By November, the fleet will expand with an additional 150 to 300 buses, with the full complement of 2,500 buses expected to be delivered within the next 8 to 9 months.

This substantial fleet augmentation is anticipated to significantly bolster the transportation network across Maharashtra, enhancing connectivity and service quality for passengers statewide. Transport experts support the acquisition of diesel buses, particularly for rural areas, citing the high costs and extended timeframes required to develop infrastructure for electric buses in these regions. An expert noted, “Investing in diesel buses for rural areas is pragmatic given the current infrastructure limitations. Transitioning to electric and CNG buses is underway, but it will take time to establish the necessary support systems in rural locales.” Founded in 1960, MSRTC has been instrumental in providing transport services to over 90 percent of Maharashtra’s villages. It remains a crucial link between rural areas and urban centres, significantly contributing to regional accessibility and mobility.
