MSRTC to Add 25,000 Buses Over Five Years

The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has secured in-principle approval from Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar to expand its fleet with 25,000 new buses over the next five years. This initiative aims to modernise the state’s public transportation system and address growing commuter demands.

The announcement followed a Transport Department review meeting held on Tuesday in preparation for the 2025-26 state budget. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik highlighted the critical need for fleet enhancement, as nearly 10,000 of MSRTC’s existing 14,300 buses have exceeded a decade in service and will be phased out in the coming years. Under the new proposal, MSRTC plans to acquire 5,000 new self-owned buses annually. This systematic upgrade is expected to bolster the corporation’s capacity, improve operational efficiency, and enhance passenger experience. Minister Sarnaik stated, “This move will strengthen MSRTC’s ability to meet the increasing demand for reliable public transport across Maharashtra.” In addition to these buses, the corporation aims to add 5,000 electric buses by 2029, bringing the total fleet size to 30,000.

This transition to sustainable transport aligns with global environmental goals and will further improve connectivity across rural and urban Maharashtra. MSRTC, known for operating one of the largest bus fleets in India, connects cities, towns, and villages across Maharashtra and neighbouring states. It provides services catering to diverse passenger needs, including ordinary, semi-luxury, and luxury buses. The timing of the approval coincides with the birth anniversary of the late Anand Dighe, adding a symbolic layer of significance. Minister Sarnaik expressed gratitude to Ajit Pawar for his prompt approval, calling it a transformative step for millions of commuters in the state. This fleet expansion signals a new era for MSRTC, promising more efficient, accessible, and eco-friendly transportation options for Maharashtra’s citizens.
