MSRTC Sets Record Rs 21.44 Crore Online Ticket Sales During Diwali 2025

Maharashtra’s state-run transport body has recorded its highest-ever digital ticketing revenue this Diwali, underscoring the success of its modernisation drive and the growing trust of passengers in online public transport services.

The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) earned over ₹21.44 crore from online ticket sales between October 17 and 27, 2025, marking a record milestone in its digital operations. The figures reflect a significant increase from the previous year, as the state’s iconic red “Lal Pari” buses carried thousands of festive travellers connecting cities, towns, and rural regions. According to officials, the corporation sold 4.41 lakh tickets online this Diwali, reserving 6.6 lakh seats — a rise of more than one lakh over last year. The revenue jump of ₹4.77 crore compared to the 2024 festive period highlights the rapid adoption of MSRTC’s digital ticketing system, especially among intercity passengers.

A senior MSRTC official said the digital platform has “transformed the booking experience for passengers” by reducing waiting times and improving transparency. “Earlier, people depended heavily on physical counters or agents. Now, with online access available across devices, we’re seeing passengers from rural and semi-urban areas booking directly through the app or website,” the official added. The surge in online transactions comes at a crucial time for MSRTC, which has been recovering from financial strain caused by the pandemic and rising operational costs. The strong festive earnings are expected to strengthen the corporation’s cash flow and support its ongoing transition to cleaner, more efficient public transport.

Industry observers noted that the success of digital ticketing also helps reduce paper waste and manual errors — aligning with broader goals of sustainable and tech-driven urban mobility. As public transport authorities across India seek to integrate digital payment systems, MSRTC’s performance sets a precedent for state-run fleets aiming for both financial viability and environmental efficiency. Officials said the corporation plans to build on this momentum by improving mobile accessibility, multilingual interfaces, and customer support for its digital users. Efforts are also underway to integrate electric buses and smart ticketing systems under Maharashtra’s green mobility strategy.

Analysts believe the combination of digital adoption and sustainable fleet expansion could redefine how citizens experience long-distance bus travel in India’s largest states. “Public transport modernisation must go hand in hand with inclusion, digital literacy, and sustainability,” said a transport sector expert. As Maharashtra accelerates its transition towards a more digitally connected and environmentally conscious transport ecosystem, the MSRTC’s Diwali performance marks not just a financial milestone — but a significant step toward smarter, inclusive mobility.
