MSRTC Set to Add 3,500 New Buses in 2025 to Improve Service Reliability

Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), the agency has announced plans to add 3,500 new buses to its fleet by 2025. This step aims to alleviate long-standing issues like frequent vehicle breakdowns and long wait times for passengers. MSRTC Chairman Bharat Gogawale confirmed the decision in a press briefing held in Nagpur, revealing that 2,200 buses will be purchased outright, while 1,300 additional buses will be leased to meet the growing demand for public transport services. These new vehicles are set to join the fleet starting in January 2025, offering a major improvement in service reliability for commuters across Maharashtra.

MSRTC has been under significant strain in recent years due to a reduction in the number of operational buses, which fell from 18,000 to just 14,000 during the pandemic. This decline has made it difficult for the corporation to keep up with the increasing demand for public transport, leaving passengers facing long waiting times and unreliable services. The introduction of 3,500 new buses is expected to greatly ease these issues, significantly enhancing commuter experience and improving the overall efficiency of the transport system. It is part of MSRTC’s larger efforts to restore its fleet to pre-pandemic levels and ensure that services are both dependable and frequent.

Along with the purchase of new buses, MSRTC has also been working on expanding its green fleet, with an order placed for 5,100 electric buses in 2022. However, delays in delivery from the supplier have hampered the corporation’s ability to meet its sustainability goals. The addition of new buses in 2025 will be crucial in bridging the gap between demand and supply while MSRTC continues to work on its long-term electrification plans. In addition, the development of new bus stations and infrastructure improvements across the state will help support the corporation’s capacity to serve a growing population. With these initiatives, MSRTC aims to enhance its service offerings and restore its position as a key provider of public transportation in Maharashtra.
