MSRTC Nagpur Division To Get 160 Rajmata Jijau Buses

The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is poised to significantly strengthen its regional network with the addition of 160 new “Rajmata Jijau” buses at its Nagpur division, a move that underscores ongoing efforts to improve inter-city mobility and service reliability across the state. The announcement comes as part of MSRTC’s broader fleet rejuvenation strategy, with new buses expected to begin operations from March 2026 onwards.

Transport authorities say the new fleet — which will be distributed across eight depots in the Nagpur division — aims to deepen connectivity not only within the city’s hinterland but also on longer routes linking Nagpur to other urban centres in Maharashtra. The vehicles, unveiled during a recent launch event by the state’s transport leadership, reflect a focus on expanding capacity and passenger comfort on regional corridors that have seen growing demand. Each of the new buses will feature a BS-VI-compliant engine, meeting the latest national emission standards designed to reduce air pollutants from diesel transport vehicles. The 55-seater configuration marks a step up from older models, addressing both capacity constraints and commuter comfort on high-demand routes.

Urban transport planners note that enhanced public bus services can play a crucial role in balancing mobility equity — particularly in regions such as Vidarbha where long distances and limited rail options make affordable bus travel vital for daily commuters and inter-urban travellers alike. By increasing seating capacity and service frequency, MSRTC’s fleet expansion may help reduce reliance on informal or private operators, lowering travel costs while also improving service predictability. The choice to name the new fleet “Rajmata Jijau” resonates with local cultural heritage, honouring the mother of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj — a figure often associated with resilience and leadership in Maharashtra’s history. MSRTC has previously named premium services after revered icons to evoke regional identity and pride.

Despite these gains, challenges remain in integrating expanded bus services into a sustainable urban mobility framework. Transport experts argue that improving frequency and comfort must be matched with investments in supporting infrastructure — such as modern bus stations, dedicated lanes where feasible, and real-time service information systems — to ensure that enhanced services translate into higher ridership and reduced private vehicle dependence. The new buses are expected to be rolled out in phases from March, with initial deployments on key inter-city routes followed by wider network integration across the division. Local officials have emphasised the economic and social benefits of improved connectivity, noting that reliable public transport can expand access to jobs, education and healthcare for communities outside major urban cores.

As MSRTC balances its fleet modernisation with operational sustainability, the Nagpur expansion could serve as an important case of how regional mobility investment complements broader urban growth strategies — a crucial component in reducing transport inequities and supporting climate-responsive development across Maharashtra’s mid-sized cities.
