MSRTC Leverages 3,360 Acres for Modern Transport Depots
Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is set to transform its vast land holdings into modern transportation hubs, following the announcement by Maharashtra’s Transport Minister, Pratap Sarnaik, at a conclave hosted by NAREDCO GenNext on Tuesday. MSRTC currently holds an extensive 3,360-acre land bank across the state, and the government plans to develop these plots into state-of-the-art depots under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
Minister Sarnaik encouraged developers to collaborate with the government to build these transport facilities, which will be strategically located at district, taluka, and village levels across Maharashtra. The aim is to create functional and modern depots that will cater to the growing demand for efficient transport solutions across the state. The government is considering offering the land on a 99-year lease to private developers to ensure long-term development and maintenance of the depots. The design and planning of these transport hubs will be led by the renowned architect Hafeez Contractor, ensuring world-class infrastructure and design standards. The project will be aligned with the Unified Development Control and Promotion Regulations (UDCPR), with MSRTC serving as the planning authority for these developments.
According to the current proposal, approximately 90% of the land earmarked for these depots will fall under the UDCPR’s jurisdiction, ensuring streamlined approvals and adherence to regulatory norms. The announcement was met with strong support from the real estate sector, as evident by the attendance of NAREDCO Chairman Dr. Niranjan Hiranandani, Vice Chairman Rajan Bandelkar, and other key industry players at the conclave. The initiative has generated significant interest, with stakeholders in the construction and real estate sectors eager to engage in the development of these crucial transportation hubs. This ambitious project promises to modernise Maharashtra’s transport infrastructure while also boosting economic activity, creating jobs, and providing new opportunities for public-private collaboration in the region.
