The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has unveiled plans to expand the Mumbai Pune Expressway from its current six lanes to a robust 10-lane corridor.
This ambitious ₹14,900 crore project aims to alleviate the mounting pressure on one of India’s busiest highways, enhancing connectivity between Mumbai and Pune. The Mumbai Pune Expressway, inaugurated in 2002, has been a vital link between Maharashtra’s financial capital and its educational and industrial hub. Originally designed to handle a daily traffic load of approximately 43,000 passenger car units (PCUs), the expressway now accommodates over 65,000 vehicles on weekdays, with numbers soaring to over 100,000 during weekends and holidays . The proposed expansion focuses on the 83 km stretch not covered by the ongoing 13 km “missing link” project in the Khandala Ghat section, which is being upgraded to 14 lanes.
