Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has issued a stark warning regarding the environmental impact of the state’s sugar industries. According to a recent report, between May 2023 and June 2024, MPCB issued 20 directives aimed at mitigating pollution from these industries. Pune emerged as a critical area, receiving the highest number of notices, seven in total, with Aurangabad and Kolhapur following closely, each with four notices.
These directives are primarily focused on controlling water and air pollution emanating from the sugar industries, which have proliferated across Maharashtra, particularly in the western regions where water resources are abundant, making them ideal for sugarcane cultivation. While sugarcane is economically significant as a cash crop, its processing has led to substantial environmental concerns. The MPCB, empowered by the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act of 1974 and the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act of 1981, has mandated various measures including wastewater treatment and air pollution control systems. However, the report highlights ongoing challenges: numerous industries have failed to comply with these regulations, continuing to discharge untreated waste into local water bodies, particularly during the rainy season, thereby exacerbating river pollution.
The severity of non-compliance is underscored by the issuance of closure directives to three industries, including one in Chandrapur and two in Aurangabad. Despite repeated notices, enforcement remains a significant challenge, often hampered by influential stakeholders within the industry. The report indicates that many sugar mills are yet to adopt necessary pollution control measures, resulting in persistent water and air pollution issues. Untreated effluents and emissions continue to pose a threat to the environment, affecting both local communities and ecosystems. The recurring non-compliance by these industries underscores the need for stringent enforcement and enhanced regulatory oversight.
The MPCB’s actions reflect an urgent need to address these environmental concerns. The directives serve as a crucial step towards safeguarding Maharashtra’s water resources and mitigating air pollution risks posed by the sugar industry. There is a pressing need for these industries to align with environmental regulations and implement effective pollution control measures. The MPCB’s efforts are crucial in promoting sustainable industrial practices and protecting the state’s natural resources. Moving forward, it is imperative for the MPCB to enhance its monitoring and enforcement capabilities to ensure compliance with environmental regulations. The cooperation of industry stakeholders is essential to achieve a balance between economic development and environmental sustainability. The ongoing pollution issues necessitate a collaborative approach to protect Maharashtra’s environment for future generations.
