MP to Build Hostels for Working Women in Industrial Hubs

The Madhya Pradesh cabinet has approved the construction of working women hostels across the state’s major industrial areas.

Backed by the Centre’s Sakhi Niwas scheme, the project will focus on safe, affordable housing options for employed women, with an initial investment of ₹248 crore across four key zones. The first phase of the initiative will include ₹66 crore for Udyogpuri (Ujjain), ₹76 crore for Pithampur near Indore, ₹77 crore for Mandideep near Bhopal, and ₹29 crore for Malanpur near Gwalior. Additional industrial locations will be covered in later phases, with plans to also tap into Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds from local industries to support the development. Urban Development Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya announced the decision following a cabinet meeting held in Indore, where he underscored the joint efforts of the state and central governments in prioritising residential safety and empowerment for women workers. “The state is proactively building hostels in industrial areas with strong support from the Centre and interest from Prime Minister Modi,” he said.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has also ordered the expansion of ‘Sakhi-Niwas’ hostels under Mission Shakti to all cities and employment hubs with significant female workforces. These facilities will not only offer secure accommodation but will also function as centres for skill development and employment training. The development aligns with similar efforts by other states. Tamil Nadu has established hostels equipped with biometric attendance and CCTV surveillance, while Andhra Pradesh is developing such facilities in Visakhapatnam through public-private partnerships. Nationally, the Ministry of Women and Child Development has allocated ₹5,000 crore for hostel construction in 28 states.

First launched in 1972–73, the Working Women Hostel Scheme continues to support infrastructure expansion in urban, semi-urban, and rural zones where employment opportunities exist. With this renewed push, Madhya Pradesh aims to make its industrial areas safer and more accessible to women seeking work and training.
