The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) has launched the One Nation One Port (ONOP) initiative, marking a significant step towards transforming India’s maritime sector. This ambitious programme aims to standardise and streamline port processes and documentation across the country, thereby enhancing efficiency, reducing logistics costs, and promoting sustainable development in the shipping industry.
The ONOP initiative focuses on mapping existing port procedures and establishing uniform protocols across all major ports in India. This comprehensive review covers various cargo types, including containers, dry bulk, and liquid bulk, and spans different movement categories such as export-import operations, transshipment, and coastal activities. By harmonising these processes, the initiative seeks to eliminate redundancies, reduce processing times, and improve overall operational efficiency. According to officials, the implementation of ONOP will significantly cut down documentation processing time, which is expected to lead to a reduction in logistics costs. This aligns with the government’s broader goal of enhancing India’s competitiveness in the global maritime sector while supporting the vision of a sustainable and zero-net carbon economy.
A key component of the ONOP initiative is the integration of the National Logistics Portal – Marine (NLP-Marine) with the Enterprise Business System (EBS), which will serve as the central port operating system. This digital infrastructure is designed to facilitate real-time data exchange, improve transparency, and support better decision-making processes across the port value chain. A recent review conducted by the Ministry highlighted substantial improvements in port process documentation at major ports following the implementation of ONOP. Officials noted that the standardisation of procedures has not only streamlined operations but also enhanced the ease of doing business in the maritime sector.
In addition to ONOP, the MoPSW has been actively working on various other initiatives to strengthen India’s port infrastructure. These include the development of new ports, terminals, and berths, along with modernisation and mechanisation efforts. Digitalisation of port operations, improvement of connectivity infrastructure for road and rail, and the launch of the “Sagar Aankalan” guidelines are part of the ministry’s broader strategy to bolster the efficiency and competitiveness of Indian ports on the global stage. Experts in maritime logistics have welcomed the ONOP initiative, describing it as a transformative step towards building a more resilient and efficient port ecosystem. “Standardising port processes across the country will not only reduce operational costs but also attract more investments in the maritime sector,” an industry expert noted.
