Monsoon Rejuvenation Expected in Pune from June 23 IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has projected a welcome return of the southwest monsoon over Pune, with expectations of intensified rainfall starting from June 23. After a brief lull, the monsoon’s Arabian branch is anticipated to rejuvenate, bringing much-needed precipitation to the city and surrounding regions.

According to IMD officials, Pune is likely to witness enhanced rainfall activities between June 23 and 25, particularly in the ghat areas. The onset of substantial monsoon showers is predicted to begin from June 25 onwards, offering respite to residents and agricultural sectors reliant on seasonal rainfall. Across Maharashtra, the monsoon has displayed varied patterns. As of June 18, the state has received normal-category rainfall, recording 105 mm against the expected 102.3 mm for this period. Notably, Marathwada and Central Maharashtra have surpassed normal levels with excess to large excess rainfall, whereas Konkan and Vidarbha regions continue to experience a rainfall deficit. Marathwada stands out with the highest rainfall accumulation, reaching 122 mm by mid-June, which is 63% above the normal threshold, categorized as ‘Large excess.’ Central Maharashtra, encompassing Pune, also benefited from above-normal rainfall, registering 108.5 mm, exceeding expectations by 31% and classified under the ‘Excess’ category. In contrast, Konkan, including Goa, faced a 25% deficit with 246.5 mm of rainfall, while Vidarbha recorded a shortfall of 30%, receiving 55.7 mm during this period.

IMD has issued a yellow alert for Pune city from June 19 to 22, cautioning residents about possible light to moderate rainfall, particularly in the afternoons and evenings. Ghat areas may experience isolated moderate showers during this period. Meteorologists attribute the current weather patterns to the dissipation of El Nino conditions, which previously contributed to intense heat across India. With El Nino no longer exerting influence, attention turns to the potential formation of La Nina conditions by late July or early August in the Pacific Ocean, which could further impact the monsoon dynamics. The anticipated revival of monsoon rains in Pune signifies a crucial period for agricultural activities and water reservoir replenishment, crucial for sustaining Maharashtra’s agrarian economy and urban water supply. As the monsoon season progresses, IMD continues to monitor and update forecasts to guide public preparedness and agricultural planning in the region.
