In the upscale locality of Panampilly Nagar, Kochi, residents are grappling with deteriorating road conditions as the monsoon rains intensify.
The Panampilly Nagar–Thevara road, a crucial link for daily commuters, has become increasingly hazardous due to deep potholes and uneven surfaces left by incomplete roadworks. The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) initiated pipeline laying under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme several months ago. However, the project has been marred by delays and lack of coordination, leading to significant disruptions. Residents report that the road was dug up and left unrepaired, with no temporary measures like barricades or warning signs to alert commuters. This negligence has resulted in vehicles, including cars and two-wheelers, falling into the deep pits, posing serious safety risks.
Local authorities have acknowledged the issue, attributing the delays to the contractor’s inability to procure necessary materials for road levelling. The councillor for the area has expressed concerns over the lack of coordination between the KWA and the Public Works Department (PWD), which is responsible for road restoration. This disjointed approach has left residents frustrated and anxious about their safety. The situation is further exacerbated during the monsoon season when heavy rains fill the potholes with water, making it difficult for commuters to assess the depth of the pits. This not only increases the risk of accidents but also hampers the movement of pedestrians and cyclists. The absence of proper drainage systems has led to waterlogging in several areas, compounding the woes of residents.
In response to the growing concerns, the local administration has urged the KWA to expedite the completion of the pipeline project and ensure that the road is restored to its original condition. However, with the monsoon rains expected to continue, the urgency of the situation cannot be overstated. Residents are calling for immediate action to address the road hazards and prevent further accidents. This incident highlights the need for better planning and coordination between various government agencies involved in urban infrastructure projects.
