Modernisation of Vijayawada Railway Station A Rs 946.60 Crore Amrit Bharat Project

The Vijayawada Railway Station, a pivotal junction in South India’s rail network, is set to undergo a comprehensive redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. With an estimated investment of ₹946.60 crore, this project aims to modernise the station’s infrastructure, enhance passenger amenities, and accommodate future growth in passenger traffic.

Key Features of the Redevelopment

  • Infrastructure Expansion: The redevelopment will increase the station’s built-up area to 1.54 lakh square metres, spread across 50.14 acres. This expansion includes the construction of new East and West station buildings, multi-level parking facilities, and a skywalk to improve passenger movement and accessibility.

  • Enhanced Passenger Amenities: To cater to the growing number of passengers, the station will feature 35 lifts, escalators, and modern waiting halls. The redevelopment also includes the installation of premium modular toilets, improved platform surfaces, and better illumination to enhance the overall passenger experience.

  • Improved Circulation and Safety: The project plans to replace existing foot overbridges with a central 12-metre-wide bridge and two side bridges of three metres each, aimed at easing congestion and improving pedestrian safety.

  • Sustainable Design: The redevelopment follows green building protocols, incorporating sustainable design features to align with India’s long-term urban transport goals.

The project will be executed under the Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) model as a Public-Private Partnership (PPP). The central government will provide ₹264 crore through Viability Gap Funding (VGF), with an additional ₹132 crore from the Ministry of Railways. The remaining investment will be contributed by private players. Construction is expected to be completed within 36 months.

Vijayawada Railway Station currently handles a daily footfall of 1.14 lakh passengers, with projections estimating this number to reach two lakh by 2065. The redevelopment aims to scale up passenger handling capacity to 20,000 during peak hours, ensuring the station can accommodate future growth and continue to serve as a vital transportation hub in the region.

The redevelopment of Vijayawada Railway Station represents a significant step towards modernising India’s railway infrastructure. By enhancing capacity, improving amenities, and incorporating sustainable design, the project aims to provide a better travel experience for passengers and support the region’s economic growth.
