MMRDA Pushes Kalyan Ulhasnagar Metro Extension Plan

Plans to extend rapid transit deeper into the eastern suburbs of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region have moved a step forward, as the regional planning authority begins preparatory work for a new Kalyan Ulhasnagar Metro extension aimed at improving mobility in one of the fastest-growing urban clusters outside Mumbai.

Officials have initiated the process of appointing a general consultant for the proposed 11.8-kilometre elevated corridor that will expand the under-construction Metro Line 5 network beyond Kalyan. The project proposal, backed by a completed detailed project report, is expected to be placed before the state government in the coming weeks for formal approval. Urban transport planners say the Kalyan Ulhasnagar Metro extension could significantly improve connectivity in Thane district’s eastern belt, where rapid population growth has put enormous pressure on suburban rail services and road infrastructure. Large residential neighbourhoods around Kalyan, Ulhasnagar and surrounding towns rely heavily on overcrowded trains and congested arterial roads to reach employment hubs in Thane, Navi Mumbai and Mumbai.

The planned corridor will begin near the Kon Gaon station on Metro Line 5, which connects Thane, Bhiwandi and Kalyan. From there, the elevated route is expected to pass through key neighbourhoods including Durgadi, Khadakpada and Bhoirwadi before splitting into two branches—one terminating within Kalyan and another extending toward Ulhasnagar. Transport analysts note that the Kalyan branch is particularly significant because it is expected to integrate with the proposed Metro Line 12 corridor linking Kalyan to Navi Mumbai. If completed as planned, the interchange would create an important cross-regional transit network connecting eastern Thane district with emerging economic nodes in Navi Mumbai.

Ridership projections prepared for the project indicate strong demand. Planners estimate that the broader stretch of the corridor linking Thane to Kalyan could eventually support daily ridership running into several lakh passengers, reflecting the growing commuter base in the region’s expanding housing markets. The Ulhasnagar spur is also expected to attract a steady passenger base as residential density increases. Despite its potential, the project faces several early-stage challenges typical of urban infrastructure expansion. Land will be required for construction and station development, including parcels currently under government control as well as privately owned plots. Environmental clearances and statutory approvals will also form part of the planning process before full-scale construction can begin.

Urban development experts say metro connectivity is increasingly shaping the growth trajectory of peripheral cities around Mumbai. As affordable housing and industrial activity expand eastward, transit-oriented infrastructure such as the Kalyan Ulhasnagar Metro extension could help reduce car dependence, cut travel time, and support more sustainable urban growth patterns. The regional authority is also examining additional extensions of Metro Line 5 beyond Kalyan. Planning discussions have included potential links toward Badlapur and Titwala, both rapidly urbanising areas where demand for efficient public transport is rising.

If these proposals advance in stages, the eastern corridor could evolve into a major mobility spine supporting climate-conscious transport and balanced metropolitan development across the Mumbai region.
