MMRDA Plans Food Plaza and Fuel Station at Atal Setu’s Navi Mumbai End
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced plans to add much-needed amenities at the Navi Mumbai end of the Atal Setu, India’s longest sea bridge, by introducing a food plaza and petrol pump facility. These services, which will be developed in collaboration with a private company, are set to be operational in the coming months.
The decision comes after the completion of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, which connects Mumbai to Navi Mumbai, drastically reducing travel time across the 21.80 km stretch. Opened to the public in January 2024, the bridge has transformed the daily commute, allowing vehicles to cover the distance in just 12 minutes. With an average of over 22,000 vehicles using the bridge daily, there has been growing demand for roadside amenities, such as food and fuel facilities, to cater to the needs of both passengers and drivers. Currently, motorists traveling on the sea bridge face inconvenience due to the lack of any nearby food or fuel stations. This absence of services has prompted MMRDA to plan the construction of a food plaza and a petrol pump on either side of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link. These facilities will not only cater to travelers but will also help alleviate the need for drivers to search for stops before entering or exiting the sea bridge.
Land for the proposed facility was allocated during the initial planning and construction stages of the Atal Setu, ensuring the necessary space for such services. MMRDA officials confirmed that discussions with a private company are already underway, and work on these developments began in October 2024. The food plaza and petrol station are expected to significantly enhance the commuter experience, making the journey on the sea bridge even more convenient. As the Atal Setu continues to play a crucial role in improving connectivity between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, the addition of these facilities will further improve the infrastructure for the thousands of daily travelers, making their journey more comfortable and hassle-free.
