MMRDA Installs 48 Metre Span On Ghodbunder Road Successfully

Mumbai Metro Line 4 project has reached a significant milestone with the successful installation of a 48-metre-long steel span across Thane’s arterial Ghodbunder Road. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) confirmed that the stretch—near Kapurbawadi Junction at Majiwada—was installed amid ongoing traffic, persistent rains and narrow working space, pushing the project’s overall completion to approximately 84.5 percent.

This engineering feat was completed over two nights using advanced lifting techniques and additional on-ground support. The four-girder steel span, weighing 325 tonnes and measuring 14 metres in height, now links critical points between Majiwada and Kasarvadavli, completing the special span installations for this section. Officials noted that this achievement keeps the project firmly on track for the scheduled Phase 1 commissioning. Metro Line 4, stretching 32.3 kilometres from Wadala to Kasarvadavli, is expected to transform urban mobility for the eastern suburbs of Mumbai and Thane. With 30 elevated stations planned along its alignment, the line is a key component of the city’s strategy to create more sustainable, efficient, and inclusive public transport networks.

In an official update shared via social media, MMRDA stated, “A 48-metre-long steel span was lifted and placed over a busy road in just two nights. The city kept moving while we worked.” The authority highlighted the use of extra resources and proactive logistics to ensure minimal disruption during the construction window, particularly given the challenging monsoon conditions and limited operational space due to nearby flyovers. The Metro 4 corridor will not only provide a safer and faster commuting option but also help curb road congestion and reduce vehicular emissions in a region battling traffic overload and rising carbon footprints. The seamless integration of this metro line with other transit corridors is expected to cut commute times by up to 75 percent on several congested routes, especially during peak hours.

Additionally, the ongoing 2.7-kilometre Line 4A extension up to Gaimukh is poised to enhance last-mile connectivity, bridging further urban transport gaps in the rapidly expanding northern periphery of the MMR. Experts suggest that such extensions will boost multimodal integration and promote a modal shift from private vehicles to public transport, contributing to the city’s climate and sustainability goals. The MMRDA’s steady progress, despite adverse working conditions, reflects a growing institutional commitment to delivering critical transport infrastructure without compromising public convenience. As the city prepares to accommodate greater transit demand in the coming years, the timely completion of projects like Metro Line 4 will be essential to building more resilient, equitable, and low-emission urban environments.

While some sections of the project may still face operational testing and station readiness checks, authorities remain confident of meeting commissioning timelines, reinforcing public trust in Mumbai’s expanding metro network.
