Mizoram’s Governor has advocated for the implementation of ropeway transport under the National Ropeways Development Programme, Parvatmala Pariyojana, to address Aizawl’s escalating traffic congestion and limited urban space. A recent high-level meeting at Raj Bhavan brought together officials from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML), and the state’s Urban Development & Poverty Alleviation (UD&PA) Department to discuss the feasibility and planning of this initiative.
Aizawl, perched on a ridge with steep slopes, faces significant urban mobility challenges due to its topography and rapid urbanisation. The city’s narrow roads and increasing vehicular population have led to severe traffic congestion, particularly in the central areas. The Governor emphasised the need for innovative solutions to enhance connectivity and reduce traffic bottlenecks. The proposed ropeway system aims to connect key locations within Aizawl, including the city centre, Sairang railway station, and Lengpui, where the state’s only airport is situated.
This initiative is part of the broader Aizawl Sustainable Urban Transport Project (ASUTP), which encompasses a 280 sq km area and includes plans for ropeway corridors, pedestrian zones, modernised public transport systems, and regional truck terminals. The Parvatmala Pariyojana, launched by the central government, aims to improve last-mile connectivity in hilly and difficult terrains. Under this programme, 90% of the revenue generated from ropeway operations will be reinvested locally, ensuring sustainable development and economic benefits for the communities involved. The Governor reiterated the importance of inclusive and sustainable development, leveraging Mizoram’s unique topography to create a model for eco-friendly urban mobility.
The integration of ropeway systems with existing transport infrastructure is expected to alleviate congestion, reduce carbon emissions, and promote a more sustainable urban environment. The successful implementation of the ropeway project could serve as a blueprint for other hilly regions in India facing similar urban mobility challenges. By adopting innovative transport solutions, Mizoram aims to enhance the quality of life for its residents and set a precedent for sustainable urban development in the country.
