Mizoram to get new rail link by July

The much-anticipated Bairabi-Sairang broad gauge railway project in Mizoram is now 95 percent complete and is slated for operational readiness by July 2025.

Stretching over 51.38 kilometres, the railway line is a critical link under India’s Act East policy, aimed at integrating the northeastern region more deeply into the national economic grid while fostering greener, more efficient connectivity. Currently under the supervision of the Northeast Frontier Railway, the project has already consumed ₹7,714 crore out of its ₹8,215 crore sanctioned budget. The remaining work is progressing steadily, with final safety inspections scheduled in May and June. The project includes extensive engineering features—32 tunnels and 144 bridges, including major and minor ones—spanning the lush and hilly terrain of Mizoram.

The railway corridor connects four strategic stations—Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang-Sinhmui—and recently saw the arrival of its first trial engine at Sairang on the outskirts of Aizawl on 30 April. The second trial run is expected to follow shortly, reinforcing optimism that the line will meet its revised deadline. This new rail route is set to dramatically cut transportation time and logistics costs, which have long hindered economic growth in the region. For a state like Mizoram, which has relied heavily on road transport prone to disruptions due to landslides and seasonal challenges, the railway promises more reliable freight movement and passenger transit. It is also expected to support tourism and cross-border trade, given the state’s proximity to Myanmar and Bangladesh.

Significantly, this infrastructure milestone aligns with India’s broader push for sustainable mobility. Rail transport remains one of the least carbon-intensive freight and passenger systems, and the new corridor in Mizoram is anticipated to reduce road congestion and emissions over the long term. The shift could become a blueprint for other hill states where surface transport remains a logistical and environmental challenge. While the region celebrates the nearing completion of this vital asset, the focus now shifts to ensuring that operations begin seamlessly and equitably. As the Northeast prepares to plug into national markets more robustly, the Bairabi-Sairang line may well become a defining link in India’s vision for inclusive and sustainable infrastructure development.
