Mizoram is set to establish a second airport in the southern region of the state.
This development follows discussions between the state’s Chief Minister and the Union Civil Aviation Minister in New Delhi, focusing on the proposed greenfield airport and the integration of Lengpui Airport into the Airports Authority of India (AAI) network. The proposed greenfield airport aims to address the increasing demand for air travel in Mizoram, complementing the existing Lengpui Airport near Aizawl. Lengpui Airport, constructed by the state government, has witnessed a significant rise in passenger traffic, handling approximately 493,465 passengers between April 2024 and March 2025, marking a 23.8% increase from the previous year . The airport currently offers direct flights to major cities including Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Imphal, and Silchar .
The integration of Lengpui Airport into the AAI network is anticipated to bring in enhanced operational efficiency and access to central funding for infrastructure upgrades. However, this move has faced opposition from local pressure groups concerned about potential loss of state control over the airport’s operations . The new greenfield airport in southern Mizoram is expected to significantly improve accessibility to remote areas, fostering economic growth and tourism. Additionally, the state government is exploring the development of heliports under the UDAN scheme to further enhance regional connectivity.
In parallel developments, the Chief Minister of Assam met with the Union Civil Aviation Minister to discuss the commencement of work on Silchar’s greenfield airport and the expansion of Rupsi Airport in Dhubri. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to bolster air connectivity in the northeastern region of India . The establishment of a second airport in Mizoram aligns with the state’s vision of sustainable and inclusive development. By improving air connectivity, the state aims to attract investments, boost tourism, and provide better access to essential services for its residents.
