The Bairabi-Sairang railway line, a pivotal infrastructure project connecting Mizoram to the national rail network, is nearing completion.
Spanning 51.38 km, the line is expected to be operational by July 2025, marking a significant milestone in the region’s transportation history. This development comes as the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has reported that 95% of the construction work has been completed, with approximately ₹7,714 crore expended out of the revised estimated cost of ₹8,215 crore. The line features four stations—Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang—and includes 55 major bridges, 87 minor bridges, and 32 tunnels, overcoming the region’s challenging mountainous terrain.
In a recent meeting with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Mizoram’s Chief Minister emphasized the need for enhanced rail services to maximize the benefits of this new connectivity. The Chief Minister proposed the introduction of a Rajdhani Express service linking Sairang to New Delhi, a direct train to Kolkata, and a new route connecting Sairang to Tripura. These initiatives aim to bolster regional integration and economic development. Additionally, the Chief Minister advocated for the development of Sairang Railway Station into a world-class facility, equipped with modern amenities such as a Railway Reservation Centre, Parcel Management System, and internet services. There is also a request to prioritize local employment during the recruitment process for staff at the newly constructed stations.
The Bairabi-Sairang railway line is a cornerstone of the Centre’s Act East Policy, aiming to enhance connectivity and economic integration across Northeast India. Once operational, the line is expected to reduce travel time, lower logistics costs, and stimulate tourism and trade in the region. As the final inspections by the Commissioner of Railway Safety are scheduled for May or June, the completion of this project is anticipated to usher in a new era of connectivity for Mizoram, bringing it closer to the rest of India and opening up new avenues for growth and development.
