Mizoram CM Urges Centre to Address Road Durability Issues

The Chief Minister has urged the Centre to consider the development of rigid pavement roads across the state.

This proposal comes in response to the challenges posed by the region’s monsoon season, which often leads to the erosion and deterioration of existing bituminous pavement roads. During a recent meeting with the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, the Chief Minister highlighted the need for more resilient road construction methods. The current bituminous roads, while cost-effective, are susceptible to damage during the heavy rains that characterize the monsoon period in the region. The Chief Minister proposed that these be replaced with concrete or rigid pavements, which are known for their longevity and resistance to weather-induced wear and tear.

The Union Minister acknowledged the concerns raised and assured that officials would be dispatched to assess the feasibility of implementing rigid pavement roads in Mizoram. This proactive approach aims to ensure that the state’s road infrastructure can withstand the challenges posed by its unique climatic conditions. In addition to the discussion on road durability, the meeting also covered several key infrastructure projects in the state. Notably, the widening of National Highway 6/306 between Vairengte and Sairang to four lanes was discussed, along with the construction of National Highway 306A connecting Vairengte in Kolasib district to New Vervek village in Aizawl district near the Manipur border. Furthermore, the repair of National Highway 502 between Lawngtlai and Siaha towns was also on the agenda.

These projects are expected to significantly improve connectivity within the state and with neighbouring regions, fostering economic growth and development. The emphasis on durable road construction methods aligns with the broader goal of creating sustainable infrastructure that can support long-term development objectives. The Chief Minister’s initiative underscores the importance of forward-thinking infrastructure planning that takes into account the environmental and climatic challenges specific to the region. By advocating for the adoption of rigid pavement roads, Mizoram aims to set a precedent for other states facing similar challenges, promoting the adoption of sustainable and resilient infrastructure solutions across the country. As discussions progress and feasibility studies are conducted, stakeholders will be closely monitoring the developments to ensure that the proposed solutions align with the state’s developmental goals and contribute to the creation of a robust and sustainable infrastructure network.
