The Mizoram Chief Minister has conducted a comprehensive review of ongoing National Highways Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) projects across the state, emphasising the need for immediate repairs on critical highway sections. Officials highlighted that the state’s hilly terrain and monsoon-induced wear have accelerated road deterioration, making urgent maintenance essential to ensure safe and sustainable connectivity.
During the inspection, state authorities outlined strategies to prioritise high-traffic stretches linking key urban centres and border areas, while ensuring construction practices minimise environmental impact. Experts noted that modernised highways can support eco-friendly transport solutions, reduce congestion, and strengthen regional economic integration. The CM directed officials to adopt advanced construction materials and sustainable engineering techniques that reduce carbon footprint and increase resilience against landslides and flooding. NHIDCL engineers presented status reports of major projects, including bypasses and elevated corridors, highlighting adherence to deadlines and budget allocations.
Officials emphasised integrating pedestrian-friendly features, wildlife crossings, and green infrastructure to align with sustainable urban development goals. This approach aims to enhance safety for commuters while promoting gender-inclusive accessibility and equitable transport options.Experts further advised that timely highway maintenance could support tourism and trade by improving accessibility to remote regions, while lowering vehicle operating costs and carbon emissions. By coordinating with local bodies, the government plans to implement eco-sensitive project monitoring and adopt smart technologies to manage traffic during construction.
The CM instructed that contractors must complete road repairs within the current dry season and maintain uninterrupted connectivity for essential services. Officials are also exploring innovative financing and public-private partnership models to accelerate project execution without compromising environmental and social standards. With the inspection, Mizoram signals its commitment to building resilient, sustainable highways that contribute to broader goals of low-carbon, safe, and inclusive urban and rural mobility. Officials confirmed that subsequent review meetings would assess progress and enforce compliance with quality and safety standards.
