Missing Reports Clarified in Madurai Metro Feasibility Report

Madurai: Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has addressed recent concerns regarding the absence of the comprehensive mobility plan and alternative analysis report in the detailed project report (DPR) for the Madurai and Coimbatore metro rail projects. According to CMRL, these components are included in the detailed feasibility report (DFR) submitted to the Tamil Nadu government in February 2023.

The clarification comes in response to issues raised by the Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, who pointed out the missing reports in the DPR submitted to the central government. The detailed feasibility report, which precedes the DPR, was submitted earlier in February 2023, and the missing reports have now been forwarded to the Tamil Nadu government for submission to the central authorities.

A senior official stated, “These reports have recently been sent to the Tamil Nadu government for forwarding to the Centre.” This response followed questions posed by Members of Parliament in a parliamentary session on Thursday, addressing the oversight in the original submission. The Madurai metro project, which aims to connect Thirumangalam and Othakkadai, is projected to cost ₹11,368 crore. Meanwhile, the Coimbatore metro project, linking Avinashi and Sathyamangalam Road, is estimated at ₹10,740 crore. Both detailed project reports have been submitted to the Union government for approval.

In a promising development, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has shown interest in financing both metro rail projects, which underscores the potential impact and importance of these infrastructural developments. The comprehensive mobility plan and alternative analysis are crucial elements in evaluating the feasibility and strategic planning of large-scale infrastructure projects. Their inclusion in the DFR is a testament to the thoroughness of the planning process undertaken by CMRL and the Tamil Nadu government.

The Madurai metro rail project is expected to significantly enhance connectivity within the city, easing traffic congestion and providing a sustainable transportation option. Similarly, the Coimbatore metro rail project aims to facilitate smoother transit across key areas, promoting economic growth and improving quality of life for residents. As the projects progress towards final approval, the clarifications provided by CMRL are expected to streamline the review process by the central government and potentially expedite the commencement of these vital infrastructure initiatives.
