Mira Road Railway Station to Feature Mumbai’s Widest Footbridge

Mira Road, one of Mumbai’s busiest suburban railway stations, is on the cusp of a transformative infrastructure upgrade that promises to redefine commuter convenience. The Western Railway (WR) station, which serves a staggering 1.31 lakh passengers daily, will soon feature a 23-metre-wide foot over bridge (FOB) combined with an elevated deck. Once completed, it will be the widest such structure in the city, surpassing the 12-metre-wide FOBs at Dadar and Borivali.

The new FOB-cum-deck aims to decongest one of the fastest-growing stations on the suburban railway network. The elevated deck will connect the east and west sides of the station, integrating modern amenities like booking offices and expanded discharge areas to handle growing commuter volumes. Designed for efficient crowd management, the 23.7-metre-wide bridge will replace the current elevated booking office, while a 10-metre-wide extension will link the deck to the nearby skywalk. Currently, overcrowding on suburban platforms and bridges leads to delays, safety risks, and discomfort for thousands of passengers during peak hours. This project, scheduled for completion by December 2025, will help alleviate these concerns. By enabling seamless east-west connectivity and providing wider discharge areas, the revamped Mira Road station will improve commuter safety and overall travel efficiency.

Part of Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation’s (MRVC) broader suburban station improvement plan, the initiative includes upgrades at 17 other stations, such as the installation of escalators, lifts, and broader platforms. This plan is critical for a city where railway fatalities remain a concern, with over 2,500 deaths reported annually due to overcrowding and track crossing. For Mira Road residents and daily commuters, the project represents more than just improved infrastructure; it’s a step towards safer, faster, and more comfortable journeys. With modernised facilities and wider access points, Mira Road is set to become a model for commuter-centric railway development.
