Mira-Bhayander Gets Game-Changing Double-Decker Metro

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) is on the cusp of a significant transformation in urban mobility with the commencement of trial runs for Phase-1 of Metro Line 9.

This pivotal development, connecting Dahisar (East) to Kashigaon in Thane district, signals a crucial step towards a more sustainable, eco-friendly, and equitable future for one of India’s most populous urban agglomerations. The project, characterised by its innovative double-decker infrastructure, promises to alleviate chronic traffic congestion and champion a zero-net carbon commuting experience. On 15th May 2025, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis officially flagged off the trial run, marking a momentous occasion for Thane, which is set to receive its first Metro line. This 13.581 km extension of Line 7, featuring both elevated and underground sections with ten stations, is designed to seamlessly integrate with existing transport networks. It will provide crucial interconnectivity with the Western Express Highway, Western Railway, and operational Metro lines such 2A (Dahisar to D N Nagar) and 7 (Andheri (E) to Dahisar (E)), creating a comprehensive transit web that prioritises ease of access for all citizens.

A standout feature of Metro Line 9 is its pioneering double-decker design, a first for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, where both the Metro tracks and a vehicular flyover share a common viaduct. This ingenious approach to urban infrastructure maximises space utilisation in a land-constrained city, demonstrating a commitment to innovative solutions for sustainable development. This intelligent design not only enhances mobility but also minimises the environmental footprint of construction, aligning with the broader agenda of fostering green and resilient cities. The implementation of Metro Line 9 is poised to revolutionise daily commutes for Mira-Bhayander residents, offering a much-needed alternative to overcrowded local trains and the notorious Mumbai traffic, particularly during peak hours. Beyond simply easing congestion, the project is inherently designed to foster eco-friendly commuting by significantly lowering vehicular emissions. The incorporation of energy-efficient systems, such as regenerative braking, and the use of green construction practices further underscore the project’s dedication to environmental stewardship, contributing directly to the vision of a zero-net carbon urban landscape.

The comprehensive connectivity offered by Metro Line 9 will extend its reach far beyond its immediate corridor. Commuters will gain direct access to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) via Lines 7 and 7A, and seamless transfers to key hubs like Andheri (West) via Line 2B and Ghatkopar via Lines 7 and 1. Future plans include connections to Thane via Line 10 at Miragaon and to Vasai-Virar through the upcoming Line 13, creating a truly integrated public transport system that promotes gender-neutral and equitable access to employment, education, and essential services across the vast urban expanse. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis highlighted during the trial run that this stretch will act as a major decongestion solution for the Western Express Highway, affirming the government’s commitment to easing the daily struggles of Mumbaikars. He articulated a vision for smooth and direct connectivity across the Western Express Highway, with ongoing phased work to achieve this goal. The CM also hinted at future expansions that would allow travel all the way to Virar and even potential connections to the proposed bullet train station at Vadhavan, solidifying Metro Line 9’s role as a cornerstone of Mumbai’s progressive, sustainable urban future, designed to enhance the quality of life for millions.
