Mira-Bhayandar Metro Line 9 To Begin Dahisar–Kashimira Services Earlier Than Expected

Mira-Bhayandar is set to receive a major mobility upgrade by the end of December, with the first section of Mumbai Metro Line 9 expected to open between Dahisar and Kashimira. The development marks a significant milestone for one of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s fastest-growing suburbs, where demand for reliable, low-carbon transport options has surged in recent years.

According to officials involved in the review of the corridor, the final inspection of civil and system works on the Dahisar–Kashimira stretch has been completed, and the line is now progressing towards mandatory safety certification. The approval from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) will determine the exact commissioning date. Once operational, the new route will connect residents to Mumbai’s wider Metro network, allowing seamless access to key government and commercial districts in South Mumbai through interchanges. Metro Line 9 forms an extension of the Red Line from Andheri (East) to the airport area and onward to Mira-Bhayandar. Spanning 13.5 km with ten stations, the alignment is designed to serve dense residential pockets such as Pandhurang Wadi, Kashigaon, Sai Baba Nagar and Meditiya Nagar before linking to existing mobility nodes at Dahisar. For planners, the corridor fills an important gap by offering a mass-transit alternative in an area historically dependent on road-based public transport.

Urban mobility experts note that the extension has the potential to reshape commuting patterns across the region. The Mira-Bhayandar stretch currently experiences some of the highest traffic loads in the MMR, resulting in long travel times, high fuel consumption, and poor air quality. A senior transport analyst said the Metro’s introduction could significantly reduce emissions and improve daily travel reliability, particularly for low-income residents and women commuters who rely heavily on public transport for work, education and care responsibilities. The long-term plan also includes extending the corridor further north to the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Maidan by 2026, widening the reach of rapid transit for communities on the region’s periphery. Officials highlighted that phased commissioning helps ensure operational safety while allowing commuters to benefit early from completed infrastructure.

The Metro’s emphasis on accessibility is expected to advance the broader goal of building equitable and sustainable urban mobility systems. With climate resilience increasingly shaping regional transport planning, projects such as Line 9 are being viewed as crucial instruments for reducing congestion, lowering emissions and promoting inclusive development across the MMR. Once certified and opened, the Dahisar–Kashimira link will represent a meaningful shift towards integrated, high-capacity public transport for Mira-Bhayandar’s rapidly growing population. For residents, the upcoming launch promises shorter travel times, improved citywide connectivity and a more dependable mobility ecosystem aligned with the region’s long-term sustainability ambitions.
