Power Minister Manohar Lal has urged the state government to refrain from imposing any cess on hydro power projects and pump storage projects. This appeal comes amidst concerns that such levies contribute to higher tariffs for consumers, potentially burdening both industrial and residential users.
During a recent review meeting held in Raipur, Minister Manohar Lal emphasized the importance of maintaining competitive energy tariffs to facilitate economic growth and ensure affordability for consumers. He underscored that avoiding additional taxes and levies on hydro and pump storage projects would support these objectives by stabilizing electricity prices. The minister also addressed key operational challenges within Chhattisgarh’s power sector, highlighting the need to reduce aggregate technical and commercial losses (AT&C losses) below the national average of 10%. Lowering these losses, which currently stand close to the national benchmark, is seen as crucial for easing the financial strain on distribution companies (discoms) and improving overall sector efficiency. Minister Manohar Lal urged swift resolution of issues related to NTPC Ltd.’s projects in the state, emphasizing the importance of expediting clearances for both conceptualized and under-development initiatives. He specifically pointed to concerns regarding land acquisition and mining leases essential for the development of captive coal blocks, pivotal for enhancing energy security and supporting industrial growth.
The meeting also reviewed progress under the revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), focusing on its effectiveness in improving electricity distribution infrastructure and service delivery across Chhattisgarh. Discussions encompassed broader power sector reforms aimed at enhancing ease of living through reliable electricity access, with specific attention given to issues affecting NTPC operations and coal block development. Minister Manohar Lal’s proactive stance underscores a commitment to fostering a conducive regulatory environment for energy investments in Chhattisgarh, aligning with broader national objectives of energy security and sustainable development. As the state navigates through these policy directions, stakeholders anticipate enhanced clarity and support measures to propel Chhattisgarh towards a more resilient and efficient energy landscape.
