MHADA Plans Hostels for Elderly and Working Women in MMR Growth Hub

The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) is taking significant strides in its social commitment by introducing specialised accommodations for the elderly and working women as part of its ambitious plans under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) Growth Hub initiative. This development comes as a crucial inclusion in MHADA’s revised plan to construct eight lakh housing units, double its earlier mandate of four lakh houses, within the expansive 30 lakh housing target set for the Growth Hub.

As part of this initiative, MHADA’s Mumbai division will establish three old-age homes and seven hostels dedicated to working women in Mumbai. Similarly, the Konkan Mandal will construct two old-age homes and six working women’s hostels across the MMR. These hostels will cater to diverse income groups, with premium facilities such as swimming pools and gyms included for those in higher-income brackets. The Growth Hub plan aligns with NITI Aayog’s recommendations to develop Mumbai and its metropolitan region into a thriving economic zone. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has spearheaded the planning for this ambitious project, under which MHADA has been tasked to deliver a substantial portion of affordable and inclusive housing solutions.

Acknowledging Mumbai’s status as a magnet for professionals from across India and beyond, MHADA’s initiative aims to address the pressing need for safe, high-quality accommodations for working women. Additionally, the inclusion of old-age homes seeks to offer a much-needed solution to the shelter crisis faced by senior citizens in the region. To ensure efficient operations, MHADA plans to engage reputed organisations to manage these facilities, maintaining high standards of service and upkeep. This integrated approach not only addresses housing needs but also reinforces the government’s commitment to social welfare within urban development. The MMR Growth Hub, once fully realised, is set to become a landmark initiative that balances rapid urbanisation with socio-economic inclusivity.
