In anticipation of increased commuter demand during the Good Friday holiday on April 18, 2025, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has announced that metro services will operate on a Saturday schedule.
Trains will run from 5:00 am to 11:00 pm, with frequencies adjusted throughout the day to accommodate passenger flow. During peak hours, between 8:00 am and 11:00 am and again from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, trains will arrive every six minutes. In the intervals from 5:00 am to 8:00 am, 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, and 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm, services will operate every seven minutes. The final hour, from 10:00 pm to 11:00 pm, will see trains every fifteen minutes.
This scheduling adjustment follows a notable increase in metro ridership. In March 2025, CMRL recorded a total of 92.10 lakh passengers, marking a significant rise from the 86.65 lakh passengers in February. This surge reflects the growing reliance on metro services for daily commutes in Chennai.
The decision to implement a Saturday schedule on Good Friday aligns with efforts to manage the anticipated holiday rush efficiently. By adjusting train frequencies, CMRL aims to provide a seamless travel experience for commuters during the festive period.
CMRL’s proactive approach to scheduling demonstrates its commitment to accommodating passenger needs and maintaining service reliability. As Chennai continues to expand its metro network, such measures are crucial in promoting public transportation as a viable and efficient alternative to private vehicles.
