Maharashtra government has confirmed that the tendering process for Metro Line 10, which will connect the rapidly growing region of Mira Bhayandar, is scheduled to begin by the end of August 2025. The development marks a crucial milestone for the city’s long-term mobility and sustainability agenda. The announcement emerged from a comprehensive review held at the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) headquarters, where top officials assessed the progress of multiple civic and transport infrastructure projects under the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC).
The focus was on strengthening last-mile connectivity while reducing road congestion through a balanced metro and road development strategy. Metro Line 10, a proposed corridor between Gaimukh and Mira Bhayandar, is being prioritised for its role in linking the northern fringes of Mumbai to the city’s broader metro grid. Once operational, it is expected to significantly reduce travel time, ease dependency on private vehicles, and lower the region’s carbon footprint. Officials leading the review emphasised that the metro and road infrastructure should progress simultaneously, particularly along the critical Fountain-Ghodbunder Road stretch, which currently faces severe congestion during peak hours. By aligning metro construction with parallel road upgrades, the government aims to provide an integrated and sustainable urban transport system.
In a move to retain cultural identity while planning modern transit, authorities have directed that stations on Metro Line 10 reflect local heritage. Station names are likely to commemorate traditional villages and communities in the region, especially from the Agri-Koli backgrounds, with suggestions invited from residents. MBMC is tasked with compiling this feedback and submitting a comprehensive report to MMRDA to ensure that the voices of local communities are heard. Alongside the metro initiative, the review meeting also highlighted progress on 47 separate road infrastructure projects being executed by MMRDA within the municipal boundary. Of these, 35 have already been completed, and the remaining 12 are nearing 70 per cent completion. Officials have been instructed to expedite the finishing of pending works to synchronise with the metro rollout timeline.
The proposed Metro Line 10 represents more than a transport corridor—it signifies the state’s commitment to inclusive, carbon-conscious urban planning. With its emphasis on sustainable mobility, local heritage, and traffic decongestion, the project is poised to elevate the quality of life for Mira Bhayandar’s residents while contributing to Maharashtra’s climate goals. As tendering prepares to launch by August-end, all eyes are on how efficiently execution follows planning. The successful delivery of Metro Line 10 will be a test case for equitable and eco-sensitive urban infrastructure in fast-growing Indian suburbs.
