Metro 3 Phase I Trials Begin: RDSO Takes the Lead

MUMBAI: The Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) of Indian Railways is embarking on a crucial phase as it initiates trials for the Metro 3 corridor’s phase I segment between BKC and Aarey, marking a significant step towards the operationalization of this vital transport link. These trials, scheduled to commence on Monday, signify a pivotal moment in the meticulous process of ensuring safety and efficiency in the metro system.

With a mandate to conduct thorough testing and assessment, the RDSO plays an indispensable role in verifying that metro systems and components adhere to stringent safety standards, thereby mitigating risks and safeguarding passenger well-being. A spokesperson from the Mumbai Metro Railway Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) confirmed that the RDSO team has already commenced preparations, with comprehensive testing slated to commence on June 10.

Despite previous delays attributed to various factors, including logistical challenges, MMRCL has persevered in its efforts to ensure the smooth rollout of Phase I operations. Trials involving fully loaded rakes traveling at speeds of 95 km/h have yielded promising results, with the RDSO team poised to submit a comprehensive report following their evaluation of the entire system.

Notably, MMRCL has conducted trials simulating passenger loads by utilizing rakes laden with gunny bags of debris, providing valuable insights into performance under real-world conditions. Authorities have indicated that only minor finishing touches are necessary at stations and entry/exit points, signaling readiness for the impending trials.

The RDSO’s involvement extends beyond mere trial oversight, encompassing a wide array of assessments aimed at guaranteeing safety, efficiency, and reliability. From evaluating braking systems and acceleration rates to inspecting signaling and communication infrastructure, their meticulous scrutiny ensures that every aspect of the metro system meets exacting standards.

Following successful integration trials and safety certifications, the regulatory process will culminate in seeking approvals from the Independent Safety Assessor (ISA) and the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) for passenger services. With meticulous planning and adherence to rigorous safety protocols, MMRCL aims to commence commercial operations seamlessly, with 19 rakes primed to facilitate over 260 services during Phase I operations between BKC and Aarey.
