Meghalaya has given its nod to abandon a 500 mw thermal power project, following the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (Neepco) expressed interest in transitioning towards green energy solutions.
The company communicated its intention to discontinue its involvement in the thermal power projects and positioned itself as an advocate for green energy initiatives in Meghalaya.
In an endeavour to mitigate the state’s power crisis and advance its commitment to green and clean energy solutions, the state inaugurated INR 500 crore CM Solar Mission. The initiative aims to foster transformation of green and clean energy throughout the state.
Meghalaya currently relies on hydel-based power projects with an installed capacity of 378.38 mw. The state faces an escalating power demand, with the current peak demand exceeding 500 mw and increasing annually by over 50 mw.
Meghalaya’s decision to abandon the thermal power project reflects a broader commitment towards sustainable and green energy sources. The launch of the CM Solar Mission signifies a proactive approach to tackling the state’s power crisis and promoting renewable energy.
