The Meerut-Lucknow Vande Bharat Express has been extended to Shri Ayodhya Dham and Varanasi, signalling a strategic move to enhance regional connectivity and passenger convenience across key religious and economic centres in Uttar Pradesh. Alongside the extension, the train now includes a crucial two-minute stop at Hapur, further broadening accessibility for commuters from Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Shamli, and adjoining districts. This development marks a significant upgrade to the regional rail infrastructure, promising better integration of travel routes while supporting sustainable and inclusive mobility.
Approved by the Union Railway Ministry following requests from local representatives, the extension addresses longstanding demands from passengers facing difficulties reaching Ayodhya and Varanasi directly. The previous limited route between Meerut and Lucknow left travellers with fewer options for direct rail access to these important cultural and commercial hubs. Now, the Vande Bharat Express (train numbers 22489/22490) will connect these cities in a faster, more efficient manner, reducing travel time and enhancing passenger experience. The decision to include a scheduled stop at Hapur railway station represents a responsive approach to passenger needs. This addition not only benefits Hapur’s population but also passengers from nearby districts such as Bulandshahr, by facilitating easier and more convenient rail access.
The move aligns with the broader Indian Railways vision of strengthening regional rail corridors, supporting economic development, and promoting equitable transport access. Since its inauguration last year, the Meerut-Lucknow Vande Bharat Express has garnered positive feedback for its speed and modern amenities. Its extension to Varanasi via Ayodhya underscores the government’s commitment to modernising rail connectivity in one of India’s most culturally significant regions while maintaining an emphasis on sustainability and operational efficiency. However, this progress in rail services comes amid challenges, with recent reports of stone-pelting incidents on Vande Bharat trains, notably between Prayagraj and Gorakhpur. While no injuries were reported, such acts of vandalism disrupt services and highlight ongoing security concerns.
The Railways Protection Force has launched investigations and intensified surveillance efforts to ensure passenger safety, an essential aspect of maintaining trust in modern rail infrastructure. This expansion and enhancement of the Vande Bharat network not only elevates travel convenience but also reinforces the role of sustainable and equitable transport solutions in fostering regional growth and cultural connectivity across Uttar Pradesh.
