MCD Resumes Key Development Projects as GRAP Curbs Are Relaxed

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has resumed several major development projects after the relaxation of stricter anti-pollution measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). With construction restrictions lifted, the MCD has resumed work on multi-level car parking facilities in Greater Kailash I and Punjabi Bagh, as well as the restoration of Kamla Market and the revamp of Ambedkar Stadium. The second phase of biomining of legacy waste at the Okhla landfill is also set to begin soon.

One of the notable developments is the renovation of the Kamla Market facade, which was temporarily halted due to GRAP’s Stage III and IV restrictions. The MCD had previously cleared a project to restore and revamp the 73-year-old clock tower at the market in March. However, only the clock tower and market entrance were completed before the work was paused. The remaining tasks, including repairs to the shop facades, painting with a uniform color, and reconstruction of the toilet blocks, will now resume, with the project’s deadline extended to the end of March next year.

At Ambedkar Stadium, the MCD is nearing completion of a Rs 5.6 crore redevelopment project, with 70% of the work already finished. The upgrades include a facelift for the facade, improved toilets, modernized stands, and new amenities like a media center, cafeteria, and changing rooms. The project is expected to finish on schedule, with work on the stadium’s facade resuming following the GRAP relaxation. The multi-level parking facilities at Greater Kailash I and Punjabi Bagh, initially delayed by GRAP restrictions and pending approvals, are now back on track. The Greater Kailash I facility, with a capacity for 399 vehicles, is 75% complete and expected to open in 2025. Meanwhile, the Punjabi Bagh facility, 95% ready, will soon be finished, providing space for 225 vehicles. With these projects now moving forward, the MCD is aiming to deliver essential infrastructure upgrades and improve public facilities, all while adhering to the necessary environmental and regulatory standards.
