The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) standing committee has finally approved a series of long-pending infrastructure proposals, marking a significant policy push after a prolonged deadlock of over two and a half years. This crucial meeting, only the second of the newly constituted panel, saw 23 out of over 130 policy proposals and layout changes receive clearance. The approved projects encompass essential urban infrastructure development, including a multilevel parking facility, a new waste processing plant, comprehensive road and streetlight revamps, and critical sanitation upgrades, signifying a renewed focus on the capital’s civic amenities.
Among the key approvals is a proposal for an automated multilevel puzzle parking facility at Bharat Darshan Park in Punjabi Bagh, designed to accommodate 188 vehicles and alleviate congestion near the popular tourist attraction. The panel also gave its nod to a comprehensive project for the operation and maintenance of streetlight infrastructure in the south, central, west, and Najafgarh zones, aiming to upgrade the existing LED network. Furthermore, the “One Road – One Day” initiative, slated to begin on September 1, received approval. This program will see one major road in each zone undergo a complete daily makeover, including repairs, footpath upgrades, and beautification efforts.
On the front of waste management, a long-stalled proposal to establish an ingesta and dung drying processing plant at the Ghazipur slaughterhouse was cleared, addressing directives from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) for scientific disposal of slaughter waste. The committee also approved the procurement of 17 backhoe loaders for sanitation work in South Delhi and the deployment of 24 mechanical road sweepers to combat dust pollution on arterial roads. Additionally, instructions were issued to shut down illegal meat shops and those operating within 100 meters of religious institutions and schools, enhancing public health and regulatory compliance.
These long-awaited approvals underscore the MCD’s renewed focus on enhancing Delhi’s urban infrastructure and public services. The initiatives aim to improve traffic management, waste disposal, road quality, and public health. This strategic push is vital for creating a more sustainable, cleaner, and equitable city, addressing longstanding civic challenges and fostering a better quality of life for its residents.
