Hyderabad: In a decisive move to restore discipline among the staff of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), the mayor conducted a surprise inspection at the GHMC headquarters on Wednesday morning. This impromptu visit revealed a troubling lack of punctuality and cleanliness within the office premises, prompting immediate corrective measures.
Arriving early in the morning, the mayor was met with a scene of numerous empty chairs and employees arriving late. Those already present admitted that many staff members typically arrived late and left early, sometimes as early as 4 PM. This habitual tardiness has been a growing concern, leading to numerous complaints from various sections of the municipality.
Expressing her dissatisfaction, the mayor highlighted that this lack of discipline was unacceptable. She mandated that all employees must report for duty by 10:30 AM sharp. To ensure compliance, she instructed the additional commissioner to collect the attendance registers from all departments and deliver them to her chamber by 10:35 AM daily. A circular is to be issued across all departments, warning that any employee arriving late will face strict action.
Beyond punctuality, the mayor also addressed the pressing issue of office cleanliness. During her inspection, she observed unnecessary furniture and outdated papers cluttering the corridors, spit stains defacing wall corners, and washrooms emanating foul odours. The state of disrepair and neglect was apparent, prompting the mayor to direct the executive engineer of building maintenance to collaborate with section heads to clear all corridors and improve overall cleanliness.
This initiative underscores the mayor’s commitment to maintaining a professional and hygienic working environment. She emphasised that the lack of cleanliness not only hampers productivity but also tarnishes the image of the municipal corporation. The executive engineer was tasked with ensuring that all unnecessary items are removed, walls are cleaned, and washrooms are maintained to an acceptable standard of hygiene. The mayor’s actions reflect a broader effort to instil a culture of accountability and professionalism within the GHMC. By addressing both punctuality and cleanliness, she aims to set higher standards for municipal employees, ensuring that they serve the public efficiently and responsibly. The swift response to the inspection findings demonstrates a zero-tolerance policy towards negligence and underscores the importance of maintaining discipline in the workplace.
