Central Railway (CR) is embarking on a significant infrastructure upgrade to ensure the uninterrupted operation of the iconic Neral-Matheran toy train service during the monsoon season. The project, estimated to cost ₹5 crore, involves a comprehensive overhaul of the 21-km hill route, addressing the perennial challenges posed by heavy rainfall and soil erosion.
The toy train, a beloved tourist attraction, has faced disruptions in the past due to the monsoon’s adverse effects on the tracks. To mitigate these issues, CR is implementing a multi-faceted approach. The plan includes constructing robust bunds on vulnerable sections, replacing existing pipe bridges with more durable concrete structures, and creating channels to divert rainwater away from the tracks. In addition to these measures, CR is also focusing on strengthening the tracks themselves.
Ballast replacement and soil erosion control will be prioritized to ensure the stability of the narrow-gauge lines. Furthermore, anti-crash barriers will be repaired and coated with anti-corrosive paint to enhance safety. The project is expected to take 12 months to complete, with tenders currently being floated. Once finalized, the upgrades will significantly improve the toy train’s resilience to monsoon conditions, allowing for uninterrupted service and enhancing the overall tourist experience.
