Health authorities in Margao have intensified fogging operations as a precautionary measure to curb the spread of vector-borne diseases like dengue and malaria, even as no fresh cases have been reported over the past week. The Margao Urban Health Centre, in coordination with the local municipal body, has deployed health workers to undertake routine fogging and spraying activities.
The move comes as a proactive step to mitigate mosquito breeding, particularly in the wake of the ongoing monsoon season, which typically triggers a rise in waterborne and vector-related health risks. Speaking to media, Margao Urban Health Officer, confirmed that the city has remained free from dengue and malaria cases in recent days, but stressed that public health teams are not letting their guard down.
“We have decided to maintain momentum in the fight against mosquito-borne infections. Our staff is visiting different municipal wards and construction zones to carry out fogging operations. We are also conducting outreach with migrant labourers, issuing health cards after basic medical screenings,” the officer said. Margao’s status as a commercial and residential hub makes it especially vulnerable to mosquito proliferation, particularly due to ongoing infrastructure and real estate development.
Construction sites, stagnant water in discarded containers, and poor drainage in certain pockets create breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Officials said that while no emergency has been declared, they are urging local residents, housing societies, and business owners to cooperate by eliminating stagnant water sources and maintaining cleanliness.
Health workers have also stepped up community engagement, urging citizens to use mosquito repellents, ensure window screens are intact, and report any suspected symptoms of vector-borne illnesses promptly. Civic officials emphasised that the success of any fogging or disease prevention effort hinges on public awareness and active participation.
While Margao has so far avoided a spike in cases, health officials warned that the risk remains high during the monsoon. Climate variability, intermittent rainfall, and warm conditions create ideal conditions for mosquito breeding. With Goa witnessing several construction activities and a floating population of workers, public health planning has become more complex.
