Mantralaya-Vidhan Bhavan Metro Subway 25% Complete
Mumbai’s ambitious underground subway project linking Mantralaya, the seat of the state government, to the upcoming Vidhan Bhavan Metro Station, has crossed the 25% completion threshold. This critical infrastructure initiative, designed to streamline access between key government buildings, is expected to ease the daily commute of thousands of government employees while enhancing overall urban mobility in Mumbai. With a projected completion date of 2025, the subway is poised to play a vital role in the city’s evolving transport ecosystem.
The 306-metre-long subway will provide a dedicated underground route for government personnel between Mantralaya, the new administrative building, and the Vidhan Bhavan Metro station. Currently, excavation work beneath Madam Cama Road and base RCC slab construction are progressing well, with the secant pile work already completed. These developments signal that the project, estimated at Rs 99.80 crore, is on track despite its challenging location within the high-security zones of the state secretariat and Vidhan Bhavan.
The subway is designed with two key segments: a restricted passage for government employees to facilitate quick and secure movement and a separate pathway for the general public. This dual-access system aims to improve accessibility for both administrative staff and the public, while also creating better connectivity to the Metro-3 line. Upon completion, it is expected to significantly reduce the travel time between the state government offices and the new metro station, further integrating Mumbai’s sprawling public transport network.
This project comes at a time when Mumbai’s infrastructure is under significant strain, with rising demand for seamless mobility solutions. By connecting two prominent administrative centres with the metro network, the Mantralaya-Vidhan Bhavan subway underscores the city’s commitment to modernising its transport infrastructure and addressing congestion. If successful, it will pave the way for further innovations in Mumbai’s metro expansion, offering a blueprint for future public sector and public transport collaborations.
