A significant traffic disruption unfolded on Ghodbunder Road near Manpada Bridge in Thane (West) on Saturday morning, following an incident where a multi-axle truck veered onto the road divider during an uphill climb.
The absence of the driver at the scene upon officials’ arrival raised further concerns about the circumstances leading to the mishap. Traffic and police officials, including senior personnel from the Traffic Department, promptly responded to the incident. Efforts were undertaken to remove the damaged vehicle from the divider, and authorities indicated that vehicular movement was expected to return to normal within the next 30 minutes. In the interim, traffic officials appealed to motorists to cooperate and avoid driving on the wrong side, which could exacerbate congestion and impede emergency operations.
This incident adds to a series of traffic disruptions on Ghodbunder Road in recent months. Notably, in September 2024, a chemical-laden truck overturned on the same road, causing an 11-hour traffic jam and leading to significant inconvenience for commuters. Similarly, in July 2024, an overloaded multi-axle truck developed a snag, blocking the arterial road and resulting in a nearly seven-kilometre-long jam. The recurring nature of such incidents underscores the pressing need for improved traffic management and infrastructure planning on Ghodbunder Road. The road serves as a critical link connecting various parts of Thane and Mumbai, and frequent disruptions not only inconvenience daily commuters but also pose risks to public safety.
Authorities have previously acknowledged the challenges posed by the road’s condition. In September 2024, the Maharashtra Public Works Department assured that the pothole-ridden Ghodbunder Road would be repaired and made motorable within 8-10 days, following public outcry over multiple vehicle breakdowns and traffic congestion. However, the recurrence of such incidents suggests that more comprehensive and long-term solutions are necessary to address the underlying issues effectively. As urbanisation continues to accelerate in Thane and its surrounding areas, the demand on infrastructure like Ghodbunder Road is only set to increase. Ensuring the safety and efficiency of such critical transport corridors is paramount for sustainable urban development. It is imperative for authorities to implement robust traffic management strategies, enforce stringent vehicle maintenance regulations, and expedite infrastructure upgrades to prevent future disruptions and safeguard the well-being of commuters.
